IES is organized by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam offers an opportunity to join one of the four branches of engineering –
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
For IES Exam, the age of an applicant must be 21-30 years. The minimum educational qualification is a degree in engineering from a recognized university or equivalent degree/diploma.
IES exam is organized in three phases-
Prelims exam – The first phase is an objective-type exam. There are two question papers – General Studies and Engineering Aptitude. GS paper carries 200 marks and the duration is two hours. The Aptitude exam is related to one of the four branches selected by you. The paper is of 300 marks having three hours of duration.
Negative marking is applicable for both papers. Marks scored in the Prelims exam are not counted while preparing the final merit list.
Mains exam – This is a descriptive type exam. There are two question papers related to the subject you have chosen. Both papers are 300 marks each. The duration is three hours for an individual paper.
Interview (personality test) – Those candidates qualifying the Mains exam are called for the interview or personality test which is of 200 marks. The final merit list is prepared including the marks of the Mains exam and interview.

Study NCERT textbooks from class VI-XII to prepare for GK. Read a newspaper and monthly magazine Pratiyogita Nirdeshika. Questions in the GS paper focus on energy and environment, science and engineering, industrial development and engineering and governance along with current affairs. Read books by Satyaprakesh, Swadesh Kumar and Jaykumar.
